あげさげ【上げ下げ】

1 〔上げることと下げること〕 raising and lowering.

～する raise and lower; move sth up and down.

●この水栓はレバーを上げ下げして水量を調節します. By raising and lowering this handle you can adjust the amount of water that comes out of this faucet [tap].

●箸(_はし)の上げ下げ the picking up and setting down of chopsticks; the way one uses chopsticks when eating. [⇒あげおろし]

●彼は腕の上げ下げをして新しい背広の着心地を確かめた. He raised and lowered his arms to test how the new jacket would feel on him.

●客膳の上げ下げや座敷の掃除が私の仕事です. Setting out guests' meals and clearing the dishes away afterwards and cleaning the guest rooms is my job.

2 〔ほめることとけなすこと〕 praising and belittling.
